Most candles are made of paraffin or tallow, which is actually a byproduct of the crude oil production process. Paraffin is a short chain fatty acids that are gel like in consistency. Candle makers sometimes refer to them as liquid paraffin or tallow, but technically they are not the same thing. Candle makers prefer to call liquid paraffin candles natural soy candles because soy based candles do not contain any long chain fatty acids.
Candle wax can be made from bees wax, meadow wax, soy wax, or palm wax. Beeswax produces a white waxy shine while meadow wax produces a more natural yellow or brown color. Soy wax candles are generally a bit more expensive than the other two, but they are more durable. Palm wax burns clean and is great if you want a candle that lasts a long time. Soy wax also burns clean, leaving little soot.
One major difference between Yankee candles and your average candle is that the beeswax is derived from honeybees. Honeybees naturally produce a honey that is used for all types of candles. So, it is not surprising that Yankee candles are made with soy instead of beeswax. If you are a candle maker, you should already be familiar with the benefits of using soy. This is a natural material that is renewable and can be replenished easily.
Another benefit of Yankee candles is that they are much easier to make. The wax is melted down in a standard wax-making furnace. You do not need a special kind of oven or anything like that. Plus, the blown candles that Yankee produces are very uniform and beautiful. You cannot help but admire them when you see them.
